âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing?â Henrik shouted, when Søren returned to Kongshøjgade. He sent Søren a furious look.
âI thought I saw someone,â Søren said, avoiding Henrikâs eyes.
âWho?â
âDoesnât matter. It wasnât . . . him.â
Henrik narrowed his eyes. âSince when do you chase suspects on your own?â
âSince today,â Søren said, wearily. âIâm sorry. I canât make head or tail of this case.â
Henrik was visibly annoyed.
âSøren,â he said. âEvery police officer has to accept that not every case will be closed. So far, you have solved every case youâve ever been given. You may have to swallow that this could be your first unsolved case. It wonât kill you, nor will you be demoted to pounding the pavement, will you? Besides, itâs not over yet. Weâve only just started! You and I will wait like good little boys for Bøjeâs report and then weâll come up with a battle plan, okay? Letâs call it a day. Iâll wrap things up here and catch a lift back with Mads. You go home. Iâll write the preliminary report.â
Søren nodded and got in his car. He sat there for a while, trying to calm down.
Søren drove down Falkoner Allé towards Nørrebro with a renewed sense of purpose. After crossing à gade, he turned right and parked behind Annaâs block. He walked around to the front door and rang the bell. For a long time. No reply. He rang the next door neighbour. Time passed, then he heard an elderly voice.
âYes?â
âMrs Snedker?â Søren said, reading the name next to the bell. âIâm a police officer. Please will you let me in?â
He heard a noise and thought she was opening the door, but she appeared to have had second thoughts because she replied: âAnd why would I believe you?â
Søren was taken aback. âEr, no why would you?â he said. Now what? The entryphone hissed again.
âIf youâre the chap who has been waiting for Anna,â the old voice snapped, âthen I suggest you run back home to your mummy. Weâre not interested in whatever rubbish youâre peddling, or whatever it is you want. Be off with you.â She hung up and Søren was left standing outside like a lemon. He took a few steps back and looked up at the building. On the fourth floor, opposite where Annaâs flat had to be located, he saw an old lady in the window. She was watching him and when he looked back at her, she waved. He pressed the bell again.
âIâve never seen you before,â the old lady said when she answered. âAnd donât think Iâm stupid enough to let in a stranger just because he claims to be a police officer.â
âMrs Snedker,â Søren said with all the authority he could muster, âIâm going to give you a telephone number and youâll call directory enquiries and find out whose it is. Youâll be told that itâs the duty officer at Bellahøj police station. Then you wait two minutes before you call the duty officer and ask him if
